Psychedelic Rock Posters

These psychedelic rock posters are from San Francisco and were published between 1966 and 1968 by The Family Dog.

The Family Dog was started in 1966 by Chet Helms to organize rock concerts. Helms selected five graphic artists from around San Francisco to help him design posters for these events. These people would later go on to be called the “San Francisco Five.” These five artists were Rick Griffin, Alton Kelley, Victor Moscoso, Stanley Mouse and Wes Wilson.

These posters use vibrant colors that are often associated with the psychedelic rock scene of the late sixties. The posters were used to promote bands from the San Francisco area but also included promotions for popular artists such as The Velvet Underground.

The goal of The Family Dog was to capture human expression. They wanted to make art that exemplifies the free spirit that is often associated with the 1960s. They wanted to be a leader in the movement for peace and love for future generations.
